GrizzlyTrek is seeking one CSU Coordinator (Liquid Hydrogen) to join our valued client's team on a major net-zero hydrogen project in Alberta's Industrial Heartland. This is a Full-Time Contract role spanning the construction phase in 2026 and the Commissioning & Startup (C&SU) phase in 2027.Under the direction of the CSU Manager, the CSU Coordinator will be responsible for preparing and leading the safe Commissioning and Startup of the Hydrogen Liquification Unit (LHY). This position will also support the Air Separation Unit (ASU) commissioning, as it comes on stream first and is a similar cryogenic plant. The role moves from document-focused planning during construction to hands-on field leadership during startup, with safety as the foundation of every decision.
What You'll Do
- Lead safe execution of all C&SU work for the LHY Unit, with parallel support for the ASU. Audit, intervene, coach, and mentor in the field. Follow client EH&S standards and the SIMOPS Plan, and communicate planned activities face-to-face to the construction workforce.
- Build LHY-specific expertise during the 2026 construction phase. Get up to speed on the CSU Execution Plan, project schedule, and systemization, and become the resident expert on the assigned Process Unit.
- Review, comment on, and finalize all LHY Commissioning Packages and Procedures, aligning with vendor and engineering requirements. Support finalization of temporary spools and consumables needed for the CSU phase.
- Become qualified to issue Safe Work Permits (SWPs) per client standards and proficient in the SmartCompletions Completions Management System (CMS).
- Attend and run Construction Complete and Mechanically Complete (CC, MC/STCC) walkdowns to a high standard. Manage punch lists through the System Handover Management Process.
- Execute high-pressure leak tests and vacuum tests to ensure the integrity of the cold box and storage systems. Run complex nitrogen and helium purging cycles to remove oxygen and moisture before hydrogen introduction.
- Assist with startup of hydrogen compressors, turbo-expanders, and ortho-to-para hydrogen conversion catalysts. Manage initial cool-down sequences and the first introduction of liquid hydrogen into storage tanks.
- Attend daily CSU execution meetings, prepare the 3-week lookahead, and coordinate field activities between Operations and Craft Discipline Leads. Develop and issue nightshift Daily Order Instructions (DOIs).
- Act as the CSU liaison with vendors and specialty contractors on site, removing barriers to their work and monitoring progress.
- Support the Operations Readiness Inspection (ORI/PSSR), validating that all requirements are satisfactorily met prior to Startup.
What You Bring
- 5+ years of experience in gas processing, refining, or cryogenic air separation units (ASU).
- Certification as a Power Engineer (minimum 3rd Class), Journeyman Interprovincial Red Seal tradesperson, Process Technician or Technologist, or Professional Process Engineer (or equivalent experience in a similar role).
- Working knowledge of cryogenic process properties and the safety considerations around contamination, oxygen, and moisture.
- Familiarity with high-speed turbo-machinery and reciprocating compressors.
- Strong safety leadership. Views safety as a personal value and leads by example in the field.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Smart Plant Review, and Bluebeam Revu.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to coach and mentor across disciplines.
- Adaptable, organized, and collaborative. Works toward the common goal and puts the team before self.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience with Hydrogen liquification or LNG facilities (rare but highly valued).
- Commissioning & Startup experience on cryogenic processes such as LNG.
- Experience with large-scale gas compression (reciprocating and centrifugal), with C&SU experience preferred.
- Experience with Hydrogen manufacturing (Steam Methane Reforming, gasification, or similar).
- Hands-on experience with SmartCompletions or other Completions Management System tools.
Work Environment
- Document-heavy planning and review work during the construction phase. Frequent focused computer time and procedure review.
- Approximately 80% field work during the C&SU phase, in various weather conditions. Frequent walking on site.
