Pay$25 to $32 USD per hour, based on relevant experience and qualifications
Position TypeFull-time, permanent
LocationPropane rail terminal, East Dorset, Vermont
ScheduleOn-call coverage required, including evenings, weekends and holidays as scheduled
CertificationVermont LP-gas certification for your assigned duties, plus DOT hazardous materials and site safety training before you work independently. PERC training preferred.

The Site

Propane arrives at a rail terminal in pressurized railcars (tank cars). Operators unload each car through hoses or unloading arms connected to its liquid and vapor valves, and move the product through pumps and piping into storage and out to transport trucks. The work is outdoors and runs through Vermont winters.

What You'll Do

Railcar unloading and product transfers
  • Unload propane railcars and carry out product transfers in accordance with your training and the terminal's approved procedures
  • Before connecting, confirm each railcar is protected against movement (handbrake set, wheels chocked, track access secured with a derail or switch lock, blue caution signs in place) and check it for damage, legible markings and matching shipping papers
  • Inspect hoses, unloading arms, connections, valves, pumps, compressors and related transfer equipment before use, and report leaks, defects and unsafe conditions at once
  • Monitor transfers, including pressure, product levels and equipment condition, to prevent overfilling and unintended releases, and use emergency shutoffs as trained
  • Perform odorization checks and sampling as the terminal's procedures require
Records and coordination
  • Record storage tank temperature, pressure and liquid level readings, and keep operating logs, inspection records, inventory figures and product-transfer paperwork accurate
  • Coordinate with transport truck drivers, railroad crews and terminal staff to keep product moving safely
Site safety
  • Keep loading areas, walkways and access routes safe and clear, including snow and ice removal in winter
  • Handle routine housekeeping and basic equipment maintenance within your training and authorization
  • Follow PPE, hazard communication (HazCom), lockout/tagout and emergency procedures. Stop work and report unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Respond to call-outs as assigned under the terminal's on-call schedule

What You Bring

  • Mechanical aptitude and confidence working with hoses, valves, pumps and industrial equipment
  • Able to follow written procedures, keep accurate records and communicate clearly with coworkers and drivers
  • Dependable attendance and availability for the assigned on-call schedule, including evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Able to perform the essential duties safely, including outdoor work in varying weather and winter conditions, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States

Certifications and Training

Required before the work they cover
  • Vermont LP-gas certification from the Vermont Division of Fire Safety, for the duties you are assigned. You must hold it, or obtain it, before you perform any work that requires certification.
  • Applicable DOT hazardous materials (hazmat employee) training and site-specific safety training, completed before you work independently in covered duties
Preferred
  • Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) Education Program (PEP) training covering propane fundamentals, bulk plant operations and railcar unloading, or completion of the National Propane Gas Association's Certified Employee Training Program (CETP). Vermont accepts both CETP and PEP records toward its gas certifications.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in propane, fuel handling, rail terminal operations or a comparable industrial environment
  • Skid-steer operating experience and documented safety training
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification

Why Operators Take This Job

This is a permanent, full-time seat with a posted pay range and hands-on work with real equipment. PERC training, Vermont LP-gas certification and DOT hazmat training are credentials that stay with you for your whole career.
