The crews install conduit, not cable. Duct and innerduct go in along right of way, road allowance and rural corridor, and the fibre is pulled or blown later by others. That means the job is conduit start to finish: plow, trench, bed, lay and backfill, with the depth and separation right the first time. Winch cat work is a core part of the spread, so you need to be steady on a plow and confident on side slope and soft ground.
- Operate winch cat, dozer and excavator on underground telecommunications conduit installation
- Run cable plow and trencher to install conduit and innerduct to specified depth and separation
- Winch and assist equipment through soft ground, muskeg, side slopes and steep grade
- Dig, bed, lay and backfill conduit runs, road crossings and bore pits
- Work to grade stakes, locates and as-built drawings, holding depth and alignment
- Hand expose buried facilities before ground disturbance and respect all crossing agreements
- Complete daily pre-trip inspections and greasing, and take part in tailgate safety meetings
- Verifiable telecommunications construction experience. This is a hard requirement.
- Seat time on winch cat, plus dozer and excavator
- Experience installing conduit and duct, including plowing, trenching, bedding and backfill
- Ability to hold depth and alignment off grade stakes, locates and drawings
- Valid Class 5 licence and a clean driver's abstract
- Current CSTS or equivalent, Ground Disturbance, H2S Alive and Standard First Aid
- Able to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and work outdoors on rotation
- Time on cable plow or vibratory plow on a fibre or telecom spread
- GPS machine control experience (Trimble or Topcon)
- Class 1 or Class 3 licence for equipment moves and float work
Pay is a gross hourly rate before deductions.
