Position Summary

The Field Safety Superintendent is responsible for leading and enforcing health, safety, and environmental (HSE) programs across a large-scale construction project in Edmonton. This role provides on‑site safety leadership, ensures compliance with regulatory and corporate safety requirements, and promotes a proactive safety culture among all project personnel, contractors, and subcontractors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation and enforcement of project safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices across all construction activities.
  • Conduct routine and ad hoc site safety inspections, hazard assessments, and field observations to identify and mitigate risks.
  • Deliver site‑specific safety orientations, toolbox talks, and targeted safety training to construction crews and subcontractors.
  • Monitor contractor safety performance and ensure adherence to project safety requirements and regulatory standards.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions; develop corrective actions and track closure to prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain accurate safety records, reports, and documentation, including inspections, training records, and incident investigations.
  • Act as the primary on‑site safety resource for project leadership, providing guidance and recommendations to support safe execution of work.
  • Support emergency response planning and drills in coordination with project management and site teams.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
  2. Professional safety certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent.
  3. Proven experience in construction safety leadership, preferably on large or complex industrial construction projects.
  4. Strong working knowledge of applicable safety regulations, industry standards, and best practices.

Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence safe behaviors in the field.

  2. Have you served in a site‑based safety leadership role with authority to stop work on unsafe activities?
  3. Have you worked full‑time on a large, multi‑discipline industrial construction site (e.g., energy, petrochemical, hydrogen, LNG, or similar)?
  4. Have you provided safety oversight for multiple contractors and subcontractors simultaneously?
  5. Do you have hands‑on experience conducting field safety inspections, hazard assessments, and work observations (not solely administrative safety work)?
  6. Have you personally led or participated in incident and near‑miss investigations and implemented corrective actions in the field?

Work Environment:
This role requires a combination of office-based and field-based work, with approximately 80% of time spent in the field conducting walkdowns in varying weather conditions. Frequent walking, driving during commissioning and startup phases, computer-based documentation work, and review of technical documents are required. Occasional bending, crouching, kneeling, and infrequent climbing with fall protection may be necessary. Shift work flexibility is required based on project schedules.

Benefits:
